Combis, colectivos...chevari!!! A day off in the life of...
Travelling in Peru - just hang out on a street corner till someone calls your name - 'Huanchaco, uanchaco, chaco, aco, baja, aja, sube, ube'!! Wherever you're going, be it the temple of Sipan (a tomb where an amazing amount of gold was stored alongside the king and a few females especially sacrificed), the beach, the huacas (enormous adobe pyramids dating back to the Moches and the Chimus), it'll cost you a 'sol' - one sunshine and you can basically go anywhere. Safety on the road??? Well maybe not quite as much as in the more official bus companies where you're filmed and then have your fingerprints taken, just in case you don't make it or so that there's no way you'd even dream of holding up the bus!!! At least a bit of adventure is guaranteed.
A day off... (well I had a few so I decided to explore the north) anyway first I head to the Huaca de la Luna - a Moche temple made of adobe over 1000 years old, its facade is filled with brightly painted feline octopussy type figures and the famous decapitator who carries a head in one hand and a cup of blood in the other. In the afternoon a taste of Huanchaco beach with surfers and 'caballitos' - Kon Tiki style reed boats. The evening begins with a mixed 'chifa' ('Chinese-Peruvian' food) and a bit of ballet at the local theatre (an odd mix of cultures with music from Handel, Nana Mouskouri and Celine Dione backed by scenes from malaga, Venice... the performance went from entertaining to totally unbearable - the tireless chica that I am found herself dreaming of rice pyramids dancing on the coast - chevari!! chevari!!! Sweet dreams & dulces sueƱos!!!
